Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness
Session Two

Skillful Understanding (Part 2)

Definition of Karma: Each intentional action of body, speech, and mind by one who is not an Arahant.

But more precisely, Karma is the intention behind the action. These karmic intentions have the inherent potential to bring about a corresponding kind of result.

Law of Karma: for every action, there is an equal and corresponding result. Why? It is a natural law, not the result of "judgement" or some outside force that acts to punish or reward.

From the Dhammapada:

We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with an impure mind
And trouble will follow you
As the wheel follows the ox that draws the cart.

We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with a pure mind
And happiness will follow you
As your shadow, unshakable.

  Roots of Intentional Actions
Greed, Hatred, & Delusion - ten unwholesome "courses of action":
Non-greed, Non-hatred, & Non-delusion - ten "bases of meritorious deeds":

(1) generosity, (2) morality, (3) cultivation of the mind by meditation, (4) reverence, (5) service, (6) sharing one's own merits with others, (7) rejoicing in the merits of others, (8) learning the Dhamma, (9) teaching the Dhamma, (10) straightening out one's view.

Karma in Daily Life

  • When we have a good day, things go smoothly, everybody is nice and friendly.
  • When we carry a grudge, people get angry with us "for no reason".
  • Watch your mind when you do something that is against your principles
May my mind and heart always be in balance.
Everything that arises passes away, may I be at peace in the midst of it all.
May I experience the results of my past karma with an open heart.
May I bring compassion and equanimity to the events of my life and to the events of the world.
May I live my life with equanimity and an open heart.
